SCOPE
The PTGA Driving Small Boats/Zodiacs qualification and license is designed specifically for personnel driving small boats or zodiacs to support land or shipbased operations in the polar regions or during expedition cruise operations worldwide. To earn the PTGA license, candidates are examined in their ability to competently prepare, use, and manage small boats/zodiacs during polar or expedition cruise operations with and without guests. Once achieved The PTGA Driving Small Boats/Zodiacs license is an industry specific internationally relevant safety management and operational competency incorporating standard maritime protocols and procedures. This license is the industry gold standard for small boat operations
PREREQUISITES
• Current First Aid Certificate
• PTGA – Working with Small Boats/Zodiacs
• PTGA – Radio and Satellite Phone Communications
• PTGA – Navigation Skills
CROSS CREDIT
Any internationally recognized qualifications that include components to the level of the Scope or higher. See Cross Credit Matrices.
SPECIAL NOTES
Special Notes: i. This award is considered the basic operational level required to be able to safely drive small boat/ zodiacs with and without passengers in moderate conditions not more than 3nm offshore or from an attending vessel.
ii. A small boat/zodiac is an inflatable or hardshell vessel 7m or less with an outboard motor/s that may be driven by a tiller or center console.
iii. This award is a valuable and relevant examination and qualification for crew and shipping company staff driving small boat/zodiacs as part of their job in any region.
iv. PTGA Advanced Driving – Polar Endorsement is strongly encouraged as a critical partner qualification for any drivers working in polar regions.
v. This award does not dictate whether the motor is a pull start or an electric start.
vi. The PTGA encourages all drivers to carry a personal throw bag and know how to use it.
vii. The PTGA encourages all drivers to understand the operating limitations of the flotation device they choose to wear during any operation.
